Rob Simpson, Owner of SEMS Design

Hello, my name is Rob Simpson and I am owner and operator of SEMS Design. I have a  background in both horses and website development. Having a background in both has made it easier to blend the two together, helping many horse owners, horse farms, horse clubs, and horse professionals in their online activities.

I was born into a horse family, playing around horses from the time I could remember. The first horses my family and I  had were Quarter Horses. I enjoyed barrel racing in my younger years. For a time period in my teenage years I had no interest in horses while I played sports.

After playing sports I had time on my hands and I found myself in horses again. This time with Arabian horses. At first I found the horses to be a hobby until I started getting serious and wanted to be a halter trainer. I have been a halter trainer now for 10 years and have loved every minute of it. Horses are a great break from every day stress, and in some ways, they are a rehabilitation to me daily.

Not meaning to back track, but I feel I should give you some background into my internet background. I started working on websites 12 years ago as a late night hobby. At that time there were not many editing programs, that I was aware of, for creating web pages. So I was fortunate enough to learn by hand. This, over time, has helped me in all of my web development work. A couple years after that I landed my first small job with a defense contracting company. I worked with this company for a summer and had a chance to see how the business side of the internet is run. I had a short stint in between that and the next job I landed, which was head webmaster for the largest commercial real estate database company, CoStar Realty. There again I learned more about the business side of working on the internet while I had the chance to work beside some brilliant programmers.

After my stint with CoStar I took a break and devoted all of my time to horse training. I say all of my time, I mean my days. My nights still involved working on the internet, just at my pace. I continued to learn new technology and new skills that have been helpful in today’s interactive website strategies. It also was a time where I found myself wondering how I could help in the promotion of horses. This is where the two skills collided. I started building websites for the horse industry that implemented the high end technology that allowed clients to run content management systems. Over time these systems have evolved with the times. To this day I continue to implement the technology that works best for allowing my clients to easily work with their websites as much as they would like. Some clients insist I handle all of the work, others enjoy working on the sites with my help, and others take over as soon as the site has been built.

I have a solid background in the following:

  1. HTML/XHTML
  2. CSS
  3. DHTML/Javascript
  4. Flash
  5. Graphic Design – Layouts and logo/identity work for the internet
  6. Database – mySQL
  7. PHP
  8. AJAX
  9. Interactive website implementation: Forums, Blogs, Newsletters, etc.
  10. Search Engine Optimization
  11. Online Marketing
  12. And more

Some of these skills are better then others, but when they are all put together for the project at hand, I am experienced at doing so.
